What is the Vienna LLP?

The Vienna Legal Language Proficiency Certificate (Vienna LLP) is a comprehensive law and language diploma designed to become a benchmark for English legal language proficiency above all in the German speaking world.
The Vienna LLP provides lawyers and linguists with a tool that will enable them to be more successful on the legal market and in the business world.
The Vienna LLP is based on an unparalleled concept, combining a standardized method of teaching at the intersection of law and language with a high standard of objectivity. It is therefore recommended not only for law students and legal practitioners, but also for language students, interpreters and translators.

The Vienna LLP covers the following 19 subject matters:

The Vienna LLP consists of both, a written and an oral exam:

Written part: One hour covering the 4/6 semesters of choice

 

Oral part: One hour personal exam covering the 12 – 13 out of 19 fields of law of candidate’s choice

Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of fields of law in the United States as well as in the United Kingdom, and in Germany or in Austria (they can also choose to be examined on both German-speaking jurisdictions), and demonstrate their capabilities in correctly applying Anglo-American legal English used to describe legal concepts in the respective German-speaking jurisdictions.
Candidates are able to individually choose their focus of private or public law. Subject matters 1 – 7 form a common body of knowledge that is an integral part of every Vienna LLP. In addition, students are tested on either private law (subject matters 8 – 13) OR public law (subject matters 14 – 19).
Students who have successfully taken any one or more of accredited Vienna Model courses (whether at the University of Vienna - Juridicum, the Karl-Franzens University of Graz or at any other university offering accredited courses) will get credit for the respective fields on the written exam; students who have passed parts 1 & 2 (= subject matters 1 – 7) as well as two of the courses 3 – 6 (= either subject matter 8 – 13 OR 14 – 19) are granted a waiver for the written exam and only have to take the oral exam.

Eligible courses for credits/waivers:

All courses taught at accredited universities according to the methods of the Vienna Model as well as all other courses offered by accredited instructors who undertake to teach in accordance with the Vienna Model.

Grading system:

 

  • Grades “passed” or “passed with distinction”

 

Failed Exams:

 

  • Candidates who have failed the exam may retake it
    (also repeatedly);
  • new exam fees will be payable.

This Study Aid supplements Angloamerikanische Rechtssprache (Anglo-American Legal Language) 1-3 and assists all users and students in learning the 19 fields of law covered in the three volumes in the four jurisdictions (USA, UK/England, Germany and Austria). All chapters of the books are developed from a legal and from a linguistic point of view in 76 modules/study aids. Each study aid comes with recommended answers. Whether you use it as accompanying literature for university studies or for self-study, this book will provide you with and strengthen your expert knowledge in these fields of law and the underlying Anglo-American legal language.

The exercises also form an excellent basis in preparation for the Vienna Legal Language Proficiency Exam, which can be taken in order to attain the Vienna Legal Language Proficiency Certificate (Vienna LLP). ORAL EXAMINATION

Candidates who have successfully participated in at least 12 units of the course, will get credit for the written examination. For the oral part they will have to take a one hour personal exam covering 12 out of 19 fields of law of candidate‘s choice (public OR private law).
