What is the Vienna LLP?

The Vienna Legal Language Proficiency Certificate (Vienna LLP) is a comprehensive law and language diploma designed to become a benchmark for English legal language proficiency above all in the German speaking world.
The Vienna LLP provides lawyers and linguists with a tool that will enable them to be more successful on the legal market and in the business world.
The Vienna LLP is based on an unparalleled concept, combining a standardized method of teaching at the intersection of law and language with a high standard of objectivity. It is therefore recommended not only for law students and legal practitioners, but also for language students, interpreters and translators.

THE VIENNA LLP EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN PART AND AN ORAL PART

Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of fields of law in the United States as well as in the United Kingdom, and may opt for German or Austrian law (they may also choose to be examined on both German-speaking jurisdictions), and demonstrate their capabilities in correctly applying Anglo-American legal English used to describe legal concepts in the respective German-speaking jurisdictions.

Two exam options are available:

1. Comprehensive Exam

(Vol 1 and 2)

Written part (90 minutes) and oral part (fee of EUR 149 for each part, EUR 298 in total)
Examination on 13 out of 19 fields of law (candidate's choice)

2. Partial Exams

Partial Exam 1: Civil Law & Business Law (Vol 1)
Written part (60 minutes) and oral part (fee of EUR 99 for each part, EUR 198 in total) Examination on 7 out of 10 fields of law (candidate's choice)

Partial Exam 2: Public Law & Related Fields of Law (Vol 2)
Written part (60 minutes) and oral part (fee of EUR 99 for each part, EUR 198 in total) Examination on 6 out of 9 fields of law (candidate's choice)

Eligible courses for credits:

Students who have successfully taken any one or more of accredited Vienna Model courses (whether at the University of Vienna - Juridicum, the Karl-Franzens University of Graz or at any other university offering accredited courses) will get credit for the respective fields on the written exam.

When registering for the Vienna LLP exam please attach the relevant certificates as evidence.

The oral exam (45 - 60 minutes) is compulsory.

 

When registering please select the type and mode of exam (Partial Exam 1, Partial Exam 2, Comprehensive Exam; 'Written & oral exam' or 'Oral exam only').

 

Please select the exam date(s) from the drop-down list or tick/check the 'Arrange an individual date' box for a different date to be agreed.

Grading system:

 

  • Grades: "passed" or "passed with distinction"

 

Failed exams:

 

  • Candidates who have failed the exam may retake it (also repeatedly);
  • new exam fees will be payable.

Students who have successfully taken any one or more of the above six courses (whether at the Juridicum in Vienna, the University of Graz or at any other university offering similar accredited courses) will get credit for the respective fields on the written exam; students who have passed parts 1 & 2 as well as either parts 3 & 4 (private law) OR 5 & 6 (public law) are granted a waiver for the written exam and only have to take the oral exam.
